Green Valley Lake History
|
A secluded 4 season resort community located in the San Bernardino Mountains. Approximately 1000 cabins and homes surrounded by National Forest. Estimated full time population of 275. Green Valley is one of the highest mountain communities in the mountains, above Big Bear City with views of the desert and Lake Arrowhead. Average temperature during the summer peaks at 76 degrees. Heavy stocking of our lake with Rainbow, Brown and Coho trout is done from May 1st thru October and provides some of the best trout fishing in Southern California. Many Bass are present (catch & release on Bass) and spawn during spring (April-May).
Established in 1892 when the Bear Valley Wagon Road Company created a toll station with a 11 room toll house, connecting San Bernardino to Fawn Skin and Big Bear. In 1903 the Tillitt Family took over the toll house business which also included the General Store , The Garage and also maintained the roads . In 1911 the county purchases the toll road . In 1912 Green Valley Lake is clear cut except the Tillitt Family homestead which is now the GVL campground. In 1915 the Trading Post and Gas Station were built next to the toll house. Mr. Tillitt improved the Fawnskin Road to Big Bear . In 1923 Highway 18 to Big Bear was completed, nicknamed the Artic Circle. This cut off Green Valley Lake.
In 1924 Harry McMullen had the idea of creating a dam and resort. The dam was finished in 1926 creating the eleven acre lake that is now fed by rain , snow melt and natural springs. This is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy yourself. Whether it is for a vacation or full time living , Green Valley Lake has something to offer everyone . So come and get away , you deserve it.
